Lego Knight

This is a story of servanthood and of a challenge I felt God putting on my heart. When I was young I would use lego's to enter into a world where good and evil was clearly distingiushed. A world where I controled the outcomes of every battle, conflict, or dispute. It wasn't my way or the highway, it was just my way because it was my world and my way was the only way. The Lego Knight is representive of the merging of my faith and my passion for building (and playing) with lego's. The story begins early in 2004 when I was taking an introductory art class at Rock Valley College. My teacher wasn't really all that good and the class was just a slide show presentation of different art works. What followed that was only a little explanation and even less enthusiasm for the subject.. While, I really didn't learn much from her class I was determined not to let the opportunity pass me by. So I began to seek the Lord on ways to express my creativity. I tried drawing which, well, didn't really work out. If you ever see my hand writing you will understand. Anyway, it hit me one night as I was trying to sleep. I was instantly on my knee's asking God if this was what he wants me to use to explore and develop my creativity. The idea was to build stuff out of lego's that symbolized spiritual things. The Lego Knight is the first of these creations and due to time restrictions, the only one to date.

In looking at the images, you will notice that the knight is a figure kneeling with a shield to his left and holding a sword in his right hand. This is how movies often depict a knight before their king or queen. It's a position of submission and service. Also, they will often take this position in order to be knighted. I believe this is important because scripture refers to all of God's people in language that would suggest spiritual warfare. Thus the symbolism of the knight. The reason he is kneeling instead of waving his sword in the air is because as God's people we are also called to be in submission to his will. I believe this knight on some level can symbolize those aspects of the Christian walk. For me, it is particularly significant because it represents the submission of my legoworld and my lego skills to God for his glory. What was once my world and my way of doing things has become his world and his way of doing things. I believe the Lego Knight in some ways represents my old self submiting to and serving the will of God. Symbolically speaking, it can be said that this piece represents my desire to serve Jesus with every aspect of my life. Including Lego's.
